A United Methodist Women Update
by Mary Lou Ferguson, Stillwater District President
United Methodist
Women of Stillwater District firmly believe in following
the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, ‘Each
church SHALL have an organized unit of the United Methodist
Women.” Presently 29 units have a Certificate of
Organization from The General Board of Global Ministries
with 28 of the units being active out of the 37 possible
units. The work is not completed until Stillwater District
has 100% participating units. There are many opportunities
to serve, develop spiritually and have mental growth by participating
in the District and Conference projects, and attending the
District meetings, Spiritual Growth Weekend, Cooperative
School of Missions and the State Annual meeting. These new
units can be four or more women that believe in the Purpose
of the United Methodist Women. The membership now stands
at 868 members, which is an increase over the 2007 report.
The District pledge to Mission is $28,226.50 that is sent
to the Conference. In 2007, we exceeded our pledge. The District
has an operating budget of $3,530.00. There is pride in realizing
our Pledge to Mission reaches beyond the community and benefits
women, youth and children throughout the global world
At the Spiritual Day Apart that was held at Cleveland last
March, the program was Prayer, which was lead by Rev. Rebekah
Belase and OSU Wesley Foundation. The offering of $637 was
given to Wesley Foundation for their building program. At
the September District meeting at Highland Park, Ginny Walker,
a Cookson Hills Mission board member described the Capital
Campaign and the offering of $626.77 was given for that project.
Each meeting had approximately 110 in attendance.
District projects varied from unit to unit but the main goal
was to provide toiletries to a local or county agency. After
surveying their area, the project was adjusted to meet those
needs. Some helped Domestic Violence, local schools with
suggestions from the school counselors, nursing homes and
individuals that received help from Food Banks etc.
The Oklahoma Conference UMW project always aids Cookson Hills
Mission and Neighborhood Service Organization in Oklahoma
City. Stillwater District was very generous with gift cards
that will be divided equally between the 2 Missions. A total
value of these cards was $3335.00 plus three cards with no
amount written on the card and four phone cards for a 75-minute
limit.
Small units are encouraged to help host the Local Officers’ Training
at Glencoe on November 1, 2008. Cluster
units can help with the snack food for these meeting and
therefore lighten the responsibilities of a small but active
unit.
